Cityguide Lille
For classic designer names, head straight for the rue de la Grande Chaussée, right in the centre of town, where you will find names like Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Lacoste.
Gourmet fare not to be missed can be found at Philippe Olivier, 3 rue du Cure St Etienne, one of France's most famous cheese shops.
Several markets take place in Lille every week. The two most interesting ones are the one on place du Concert, an excellent, bustling food market in Lille's Old Town on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, and the daily book market in the Vieille Bourse (Old Stock Exchange) courtyard.
Last, but not least, don't miss Euralille, a huge modern shopping complex located between the two train stations. And bear in mind that Lille (in common with most other French cities) keeps old-fashioned opening hours : most shops are closed on Sundays.
Most bars offer full menus twice a day. Establishments can be unpretentiously local, such as the cosy Le Vinci (70 rue de l’Hôpital Militaire, 03 20 57 36 60).
Historic venue with stunning art deco dining room. The restaurant offers creative take on Flemish recipes. Black tie waiters deliver impeccable service, and a sommelier is on hand to help with the extensive wine list.

Romantic medieval building with a lovely décor (read bricks and beams, red upholstery and antique furniture). There is also an inner courtyard and jazz bar. The menu is strong on meat and Flemish specialities. Booking essential.
39 rue de Gand

Cosy rustic Flemish pub, which looks as if it hasn't changed in centuries. Great atmosphere, which explains why the place is always packed. Try the poulet au maroilles (roast chicken smothered in a local cheese), the house speciality. Closed Sunday.

Clubs: Sapo, 11 rue de Gand, or La Scala, 32 place Louise de Bettignies just round the corner, are popular with students. So is Le Tri Postal, avenue Willy Brandt (near the Euralille Shopping Centre), which has live music, a bar and a club in an old postal sorting office. The Network Café, 15 rue du Faisan (website: www.networkcafe.fr) is one of the busiest (and trendiest) clubs in Lille, playing house and dance mainly.
Live Music: Try Le Tri Postal (see Clubs) or Le Splendid, 1 place du Mont de Terre (website: www.le-splendid.com).
Chaque semaine se termine avec des concerts, des soirées live,,, (reggae, dub, trip-hop, jungle...). La Rumeur |
